The Morning the World Stopped: My Journey to Hearco

Matthew, Audiologist at Hearco Brighton Marina

At Hearco, things are different. When I sit across from you in my clinic at Brighton Marina, I’m not just looking at a hearing test. I’m looking at a challenge I have lived with since childhood.

My own hearing loss began with unexplained episodes of sudden deafness. At the time, I was offered a cochlear implant, but I chose a different path: navigating the world through the best hearing aid technology available. Today, I live with severe-to-profound loss in my left ear and no hearing at all in my right.

To function, I rely on a Bi-CROS hearing aid system - specialised technology that transmits sound from my "dead" side to my better ear. It is the reason I can hold a conversation in a busy room and run this business. I don’t just prescribe this technology; I depend on it.

The Morning the World Stopped

Before I was an audiologist, I was a Chartered Accountant. For years, I kept my hearing loss a secret from my employers - a mistake I regret, in hindsight. I lived in constant fear of being "found out" or missing a vital piece of information in a meeting.

Everything changed one morning twelve years ago. I woke up, reached for my hearing aid, and… nothing. It had stopped working.

I was plunged into total silence. I couldn't call my office, I couldn't hear my family, and I couldn't function. I desperately tried to get an NHS appointment, but I was told there were none available. I was stuck, frustrated, and profoundly annoyed.

The "Hard Sell" That Sparked a Mission

Desperate for help, I visited several private providers. I expected empathy; instead, I found a "hard sell" environment. I met hearing aid dispensers who seemed more interested in hitting their monthly targets than in the emotional weight of what I was experiencing. They were rushed, poorly trained, and completely disconnected from the reality of living with hearing loss.

I knew there had to be a better way. I decided to leave accountancy behind and retrain in the world of audiology, subsequently obtaining a Masters in Advanced Audiology from University College London.

Why Hearco is Different

Twelve years after that silent morning, Hearco is the result of my journey. Being an independent audiologist allows me to do what the big chains can’t:

  1. I Choose the Best Tech: I’m not tied to one brand. Because I know how much the right technology changes lives, I only offer the world’s most advanced aids.

  2. No Rushed Appointments: I know the anxiety of a hearing test. At Hearco, we take our time. You aren't a number; you’re a person with a story.

  3. Real Empathy: When you tell me about the frustration of background noise or the fear of a broken device, I’m not just nodding politely. I’ve been there. I know how it feels when the batteries die at the worst possible moment.

  4. A Connection for Life: Hearing care isn't a one-time transaction. My customers are with me for the long haul, and I take that responsibility seriously.

You Aren’t Alone

Hearing loss can feel incredibly isolating, but it doesn't have to stay that way. Whether you are struggling with a new diagnosis or are frustrated with your current hearing aids, I invite you to come and see me at Hearco, based in the Brighton Marina.

I won’t give you a "hard sell." I’ll give you an honest assessment, the best technology available, and the care of someone who truly understands what it means to hear the world better.
